Discussion Forum / mailing list

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/judo-dan-it/

was created in Dec.2004 to help bring together Finnish IT professionals to discuss and generate ideas how judo and it technology/professionals might benefit more from each other. However the list/forum has been kind of too quiet and now it has been decided to start it again, now internationally...

Or/and if there is same kind of list/forum somewhere else, please give the address and I'll spread it to my Finnish colleagues.

IT in general is not a niche, just look around: it is everywhere. And IT has been applied in Judo already very much, if only thinking websites, online result services for audience. Or forums like this. In training and coaching maybe not as much or widely or wisely as could be? Black belt in Judo because with black belt a person has been in Judo long enough to be capable to see the forest from the trees.

First start was in Finnish meaning only Finnish IT professionals, but like it was told, kind of critical mass for ideas and discussions was not reached. Maybe it will not happen in English, either, but personally I am convinced it is not because of the idea being too "niche".

"This forum/mailing list is for IT professionals with black belt in Judo"
If that isn't a niche, then I've never seen one.

How about a forum for ornithologists with a third dan in judo. If you have a 3rd dan, you've not only been in judo long enough to see the forest from the trees, but you can name the different trees AND the birds singing in them... Now that's a good niche too.

An Interesting cocept... i fit the IT with a black belt criteria but i don't speak finish so I can't really read what it says on that site :(

The analogy does not work, sorry. There is very little if nothing how to apply ornithology in Judo, but IT applications are used in many ways - actually just now and here in the form of this Judo Forum. And could be used more eg. in testing, training planning etc.

Actually there is almost nothing on the site, only the invitation trying to get IT professionals "together", in Finnish and now in some kind of English (not my native language..) - A dozen of Finnish IT professionals have found the site so far and have registered, too.

Oh, is that so. Well, I disagree. Bird chirping relaxes me, especially if I can identify the bird, and when I'm relaxed, my judo improves dramatically. So who's to say other people are not like and we can't share our impressions about bird singing relaxation techniques on judo effectiveness.

Ok, let's put it this way. If you think my forum wouldn't fly, you should be able to see yours isn't going anywhere either. Maybe a few posts on a thread on judoinfo, but nothing more.

That might happen, and is pretty probable, too:-). - Maybe discussion forums for IT professionals (not for judoka) would work better for finding potentially interested ones IT professional having black belt in Judo...

If nothing else, maybe we could collect here links for IT technology etc which could be applied in Judo. In Finland I have found at least these:

http://www.firstbeattechnologies.com/index...ge=1&language=1
http://www.polar.fi
http://www.newtest.com/index.asp
http://www.suunto.com
http://www.ainoactive.com/eng/index.php?section=1

None of them has special applications or notable references in Judo as far as I know, but they could have.

If I ever write an OS X judo scoreboard, I'll be sure to come back to this thread to have it localised for Finnish :)

Hmmm....

I am an IT Professional
I am not a black belt (yet)
I run a Judo blog (which hasn't had anything posted in six weeks!?!)
I'd love to work for Nokia, since there new US offices are only a few miles from my home.

Can I join?

Maybe we shoud have kind of hangaround member class for not-black-belt-owners as well we have decided to approve black belt students of IT:-). And according your blog black belt seem to be real target for you.

Employers and lovers of Nokia as well of all IT companies are as wellcome as haters, too:-)

I am a black belt but not and IT professional. I have been to Finland. Does that count?
Here is my one Finnish phrase: karki pussi. Sounds rude doesn't it? 20 points to anyone who knows the translation.

I think pussi is a bag (I would usually get killed by extreme feminists for saying this but somehow Judoheidi you have made this statement safe laugh.gif at least in Finnish). Karki is that "pointy?"

Actually its "candy" (I am sure I didn't spell it right). Of course "candy bag" can be naughty too if you say it right. . . cool.gif

Heidi, so what you're saying for those perverted few of us out there, that Karki Pussi in Finnish loosely translates into Yoni in Sanskrit?

:)

You got it!! biggrin.gif

Here's another useful Finnish phrase (any Finns out there, please excuse the spelling):
Mino olen kourpiitsa!

Or in Japanese:
Watashiwa kabochan desu!

Or Russia:
Ya Tikva!!

Don't ask why I know. . . biggrin.gif
Kozushi
I'd guess that something like HALF of the guys I know in Judo or similar grappling arts are IT professionals.

Why?!
Kurja
candy = karkki,
point = kärki.

Heidi - correct spelling is "minä olen kurpitsa", and I sure as hell would like to know where you learnt that extremely useful sentence, altough you forbade to ask laugh.gif

Actually, my brother started it. he decided that a good way to fend off the black martekeers in Russia would be to answer their advances with nonesense. Hence: Ya Tikva! We then decided to learn it in as many languages as possible. I used to know a bunch more but have forgotten them. :) I understand that calling someone a pumpkin in Hungarian is quite the insult!! cool.gif

Hi All,

the list is no longer purely Finnish.
There are I understand at least a couple of non Finnish members (myself included).

I think the group (much like this forum), is a method to make our mark in Judo.
IT professionals working to use our IT skills to help Judo. It's a great concept. I am really looking forward to seeing what ideas and projects may come from this group.

Fellow Geek Judoka, join the group.
