Stacking means that the person in guard presses forward, lifting the legs, hips, and as much of the back as possible off the ground, "stacking" the defender's whole body on top of them and taking a LOT of power and options away from the defender.
![]() Stacking is a basic start to many guard passes, and a defense against many attacks from guard as it greatly reduces leverage and mobility of the defender. My work internet restricts most of the better photos I found of this, do a google images or youtube search and you'll see what I mean. This post has been edited by Carrera26: Nov 18 2009, 02:29 PM |

This may seem like lame/ridiculous advice, but if it's possible, try to do stretches which will allow you to put your legs behind your head. I don't think that is a ridiculous suggestion. To be able to have this kind of flexibility is always useful. In addition to the above advice, you can 'walk' your shoulders backwards along the mat to relieve the pressure. You can also look into the double-ankle grab sweep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRwHNAHo1AY) and the elevator sweep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SHqZc_PEOw), depending on exactly how they're stacking you. In order to prevent being stacked in the first place the simplest thing to do is open your guard and put one foot on their hip. I agree. Honestly, if anyone is getting stacked then they are not moving enough. I can't remember the last time I was stacked....maybe 3 years ago. Nobody's ever even mentioned or worked with me on shoulder/hip walking or anything but lateral movement in the guard, but then I am barely 6 months in...
