Jeff Glover is the name you're looking for if you're interested in the deep half guard. Thanks, you probably saved me hours of searching. -------------------- Regards,

Wow what a great thread! Loudenvier, I've noticed at the recent adcc, Marcelo Garcia was now just as comfortable using an overhook for the x-guard as he was w/ the underhook. My question is have you noticed this any in Brazil? And if so do you have thoughts/tips on using the overhook x-guard? Thanks! I have seen Marcelo doing that, but, all the time I've seen it, he used it as a transitional position to the "real" x-guard. It is very easy to attain the over-hook when people are defending the underhook (the normal x-guard). I don't even know if the overhook is to be called an x-guard at all, as there is no X being done with the legs. When he does the overhook, as he is flexible, he is able to secure people in that position, as they fight to escape, they allow him the transition to the normal x-guard, and ultimately to the sweep. I think that the over-hook is not a stable position, but Marcelo is able to use it successfully, and I believe that this is more of a personal development just like Telles' turtle guard: only they can make it happen! |

Thanks loudenvier. Yeah I've seen him use it to go for the underhook, I was just astounded b/c at the recent adcc he swept Kron Gracie, and I believe some others as well, just w/ the overhook. Like you said though, this maybe just a position only he can play. |

There's a disc about out in his second Science of Jiu Jitsu DVD set. I've hit one or two sweeps from there in competition (though only at the blue belt level, so YMMV).

Marcelo used that, and still does, but now he's starting using the overhook from the single leg version but w/ the leg placement of the original x-guard. |
