Judo coach gets prison for sex with teen

DAYTON — A judo coach who admitted having a sexual relationship with a teenage girl he was training was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison.

Daniel Doyle, 33, of Spring Valley pleaded guilty Nov. 9, in U.S. District Court to one count of Engaging in Illicit Sexual Conduct in a Foreign Place. Doyle also admitted videotaping the two of them engaged in sex on at least one occasion

The illicit sexual conduct occurred between August 2003 and April 2007 when Doyle was coaching and chaperoning her at judo competitions around the world. Doyle admitted to illicit sexual activity with the victim while he was her chaperone at judo competitions in Venezuela, Estonia, and Russia in 2005 and 2006, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio.

Doyle was taken into custody following the sentencing hearing before Judge Thomas Rose.

Doyle's sentence includes a fine of $15,000. Doyle will be on supervised release for life after his prison term and he is required to register as a federal sex offender wherever he lives.

Rose also ordered that Doyle have no contact with minors, either supervised or unsupervised, including mail or phone contact, and he must stay away from anywhere minors congregate.

According to a statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, the victim started judo classes with Doyle in 1998 when she was about eight years old.

Doyle began a sexual relationship with the victim when she was no older than 14. Doyle also videotaped at least one occurrence of the pair engaged in sexual activity when the victim was approximately 16-years-old.
