Exercice 04: ROKU. "Horizontal stroke".

At this point you already know how to apply specific pressure to create the strokes... for this reason I think you are confident enough to try this exercice.

EXERCICE 03 - How is it done?
Did you practice this exercice? Any problem?
Yes... It is a tricky one! Mainly because of its last part.
As you can easily see, exercice 03 starts like exercice 02... but, unlike that one, when reaching the point where the maximum pressure is applied on the paper, we do NOT...

EXERCICE 03: SOKU.

Our first "serious" exercice (exercices 01 and 02 were "warming up").
This stroke is part of a KANJI, for this reason it must be practiced again and again.
Here we go...

Fundamental stroke: SOKU.

Today we are going a little further in brush-writing.

THE STROKES.

Basically, KANJI have 31 types of stroke (where 8 are fundamental strokes), it means that we are going to practice only the "drawings" that are composed by one to eight "standard lines".

EXERCICE 02 - How is it done?
As you can see, when you change the pressure on the tip of the brush, stroke's thickness change as well. You have to understand this idea clearly, because the next exercice will be about the first (of eight) foundamental stroke of Japanese brush-writing: the stroke called "point".

No problem!
There are lots of excellent "pens" that come with those required tips to write proper strokes. You can select one of these alternatives:

2 蘓州金鼎制筆厰 Jin Ding - CHINA *

When I first started writing with brushes I found out that to write japanese characters using brushes were a "PPP procedure" / "3P" or "Trip" (for short):
:hap:
1 - PRESSURE determines how thick is the stroke.
2 - POSITION determines the movement of the brush.

Nuf talkin', let's practice!

EXERCICE 01.
For our very first exercice I want you to write a "dot".
Yup, that's it: just only a simple dot...
Easy, huh?
Just give it a try.

I want something like this:

THE PARTS OF THE BRUSH.
In this approach on japanese Brush-writing we do not need unnecessary information.
Thus, for our purpose, the brush is divided in three main parts:

1. 掛紐 KAKEHIMO - "Hanging cord" (used to hang the brush after cleaning it).
2. 筆管 HIKKAN - "Brush axis".
3. 筆鋒...
