This is a picture I took of judosensei after class performing a tsuri komi goshi. I really like the contrast of motion and stillness (kind of like a hurricane).

I like this picture.

At the 2000 Olympics I remember this moment the most clearly of all. It was a MASSIVE throw and etched in my mind is watching Yoshida's elbow buckle the wrong way and flopping around loosely as Honarato pumps his fists into the sky in elation at the win.

Honorato caused a sensation by beating the World champion, Hidehiko Yoshida of Japan in the quarter-finals with a beautiful Uchi-mata for Ippon. That victory was marred, however, by a tragic injury to Yoshida, who had to be strectchered off the mat at the end. As he fell he stretched out his right arm to break his fall, but as his weight came down on his arm, it buckled and he dislocated his elbow.

Well, there's a lot. But I'll start with this:

The first video footage I ever saw of elite international judo was Shinohara in the 1999 Worlds. I was transfixed. He's certainly one of my judo heros. This loss was tough to take.

A great matchup: Gill vs Inoue
Mucker vs Traditionalist
What a picture...

Karen Briggs after beating Tamura. Hadn't she dislocated her shoulder?

Wish I could find a better picture of this. It's Geesink waving back an excited dutch fan who was running onto the mats with shoes on. Geesink had just beaten his opponent with kesa gatame...

I like those awesome throws. I think capturing a still photo at the perfect moment is better than a video of the entire match.

The pictures I have that define Judo to me are simpler. The pictures involve the kids that are the superstars of tomorrow. I love going to small tournaments and watching the competitors give 100%. I see students that realize at that instant what their training is all about. 99 out of 100 (or 999 out of 1000) won't ever compete at a higher level, but when they win they look like they won the Olympics. There is something about the innocence that you can find there.
