Funny, I don't see this gentleman in the IJF ranking of the top 160. There is a Christopher Sherington at #52 from GBR. looks like another tall tale.

I could be wrong but I believe that Britain fields a full team for the Olympics for Judo since it is the host country.

this is true. as such one does not even need to be anywhere in the IJF rankings to step on the tatami for GB. however given that GB does have someone in the rankings, it's not unreasonable that this was taken out of context. surely we all remember the very long thread about the kid who was supposedly an olympic hopeful who got arrested for stealing stuff during the riots, who later turned out to be some kid who had simply said he would like to make it to the olympics some day (never mind the fact that he wasn't even on the national squad).

Here are the current British Senior Rankings. I believe that these are based only on domestic competitions, and hence they do not correlate directly with UK Olympic selection criteria. In any case, Etherington is ranked 8th.

Men Over 100kg

1 Matthew Clempner Bolton 400 400 - - 400 - -
2 Christopher Sherrington Royal Marines 240 240 - - 240 - -
3 Samson Omonua Pinewood 180 100 80 - 80 100 -
4 Neil Schofield Pyrford 160 160 - - 160 - -
4 Matthew Bryce Whitburn 160 160 - - 160 - -
6 Ronnie Plumb Redbridge 124 64 60 - 64 - 60
7 Louis Gourdin Cardiff 100 100 - - - - 100
8 Karl Etherington 80 80 - - 80 - -
9 Peter Tully Kodokan 60 60 - - - 60 -
10 Mathew Williamson Kodokan 40 40 - - - 40 -
10 Neil O'Toole Urmston 40 40 - - - 40 -

As has been noted the number 8 seed is unlikely to have been selected anyway.

Not to mention Mr. Etherington is not unknown to the police.

Having been twice banned from every pub in Blackpool

And arrested and later had charges dropped for possession of an illegal fire arm and ammunition.
