I went to North Bergen, NJ this Saturday for a Kohaku shiai (winner stays up). Though the idea behind this one is to gain promotion points, I actually really like this style of tournament. I wish it was done more often (with or without promotional points). Kind of like it's described in on this page, you fight until you lose and whoever wins most matches in a row gets 1st place, and so on. Of course, there's probably safety issues with a 150 lbs guy fighting a 350 lbs one, but I think it would be a great experience. Anyway, Billy Martin and the others ran a great tournament. Looking forward to the next one.

Here's a blog post on the experience.

And here's a video "diary" that includes some competition highlights as well as random ramblings into the camera ;-)

Nice Judo and congratulation to you. At 3:29-3:30 you missed a uchimata-sukashi which should have stopped the match. He was 100% over-committed.

Thanks for sharing.

If I am doing "win," sloppy and sissy is fine; if I am doing Judo, beautiful is my rule and goal. Judo is far more important and rewarding than "win."

Don't forget to update your profile rank listing. And review your star count.
