Ronda's pro MMA debut is tonight.

From Glendale News-Press:

The card will also see the pro debut, and a much ballyhooed one at that in MMA circles, of female fighter Ronda Rousey, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo and a 3-0 amateur MMA fighter ranked No. 1 in the world in the 145-pound featherweight class. Rousey has trained largely at Glendale Fighting Club under the tutelage of Edmond Tarverdyan and with Team Hayastan under the renowned Gokor Chivitchian.

"I'm always nervous for everything," said Rousey of making her debut. "I think it's a natural reaction.

"I'm nervous, excited, I'm ready."

Rousey, who offers a stellar judo and submission background, won't make your average debut, facing veteran Ediane Gomes, who sports a stellar 6-1 record.

"The reason I'm fighting someone that's 6-1 is nobody else would even take the fight," Rousey said, adding that her management even went as far as offering to pay for travel and expenses for potential opponents.

Gomes owns five wins via submission, all of them by way of armbar. Despite her opponent's experience advantage, Rousey, who's trained alongside the likes of local fighters such as Karen Darabedyan and Manny Gamburyan, enters today confident in her chances.

"I don't think anyone has the right to beat me. I feel I've worked too hard and nobody's worked harder than me," said Rousey, adding that she believes the matchup is also good for her stylistically. "She's a jiu-jitsu girl, standing's not really her strong suit. I think it's a great matchup for me."

Judo verses "jiu-jitsu" in the ring; let the flame wars begin. :big grin:

Rhonda: You go girl!
If I am doing "win," sloppy and sissy is fine; if I am doing Judo, beautiful is my rule and goal. Judo is far more important and rewarding than "win."

"What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball [Judo] player." --John Wooden 1910-2010

"You should first try to negotiate nicely but you can be strong after there's resistance, and know, just like in judo, when to catch them." --Rusty Kanokogi, 2008, on negotiating.

From Non-Stop WMMA:

On Sunday March, 27 at KOTC: "Turning Point" in Tarzana, California.

Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey (1-0-0) defeated Ediane Gomes (6-2-0) by submission (armbar) in the first round of their 145-pound professional MMA match.

Ronda who made her pro debut in this match submitted her opponent Gomes in twenty five seconds of the first round in what was a repeat performance of what she did against Taylor Stratford in her last amateur match for Tuff-N-Uff. Ronda who was scheduled to move on in the tournament for Tuff-N-Uff instead decided to turn pro and now we see why.

Ronda is a Judo black belt who won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in China.

She was the #1 ranked amateur fighter at 145-pounds with a record of 3-0.

The question now is what is next for this MMA phenom hopefully Strikeforce will sign her and we can see her against the top women in the world at 145-pounds.

During her post fight victory interview at Tuff-N-Uff, Ronda proclaimed that she would be fighting Christiane "Cyborg" Santos before the end of 2011 and with one more victory that could very well be the case.

Apparently she took her mom’s advice that everything should end with a juji gatame very serious!

i hope she wins everything possible in MMA so she can come back to Judo in Brazil (2016)!

Agreed...from the looks of it she is going to have to come back to judo if she wants to challenge herself. Ps I think its in 2016

Looking for vid as we speak.

This per http://drannmaria.blogspot.com/
"Ronda won by armbar in 25 seconds. Did a ko uchi, got up on top like tate shiho and then juji."

Congrats!

edit: just saw this (per http://mysportsgeeks...-ediane-gomes/)
During her post fight victory interview at Tuff-N-Uff, Ronda proclaimed that she would be fighting Christiane "Cyborg" Santos before the end of 2011 and with one more victory that could very well be the case.

I have no idea if the quote is accurate but it doesn't sound like it was wishful thinking on RR's part. Sounds like she knows sumptin' we don't.
