Greetings from the east coast of Canada. This is a great website, I’ve been lurking for some time. Before I get into our dilemma here is a brief synopsis of how we got where we are today.

Due to the departure of our Sensei the local club had folded some time ago. Last year this time he married and returned to live here, his work schedule (he was a Helicopter Maintence Engineer), would have him at home for a few weeks then away working for a few weeks. We discussed reviving the club again as a good friend (who has a dusty old brown belt from years ago) wanted to retrain for his Shodan and the rest of us wanted to continue with our journey. We had intentions of restarting the club in the fall. Through a series of very unfortunate events, our Sensei, (not to mention our very good friend) was killed in a helicopter crash last July. Here he is:

Upon discussing it amongst a few of us crusty, old, stubborn, fat farts we decided that we should start to train again amongst ourselves anyway. Our dusty old brown belt buddy, a dusty old blue belt, an orange belt and a yellow belt (me….don’t pretend you’re not impressed). As of October we’ve trainied religiously twice a week for 2 hours per session. We’ve had pulled muscles, a broken toe, bloody noses, a subluxation of the knee a-la-suki nage gone bad , but we’ve persevered none-the-less. Our dusty old brown belt buddy has retained a lot of his knowledge and is stacking up to be a very reliable, competent “Sensei”….we are officially being sponsored by a club in a nearby city, as we do not have a Shodan in our club. We’ve recently secured funding for 32 tatami which gives us a 26’X26’ training surface, we also have 15-ish leftover tatami (what happened to all of the original tatami is a completely different story I won’t bore you with that), so we should be at 30-ish square feet, this makes us viable as a club again. We plan to officially kick off the club in the fall of this year with kids, young adult and adult classes. There has been alot of interest. Which leads me here.

We are currently brainstorming a name for the club. My Japanese is weak and pretty much limited to things like “hold the sushi” or “mmmmm that miso soup is yummy”. I’m not fond of the English – Japanese translators as the words may literally mean the same thing but not be used in the same context.

As a tribute to our Sensei and the nature of the club to date we’ve been thinking of something along the lines of “reborn” , “resurrected”, the only thing we could come up with that sounds Either bit reasonable is “saigen “ which apparently means return or revival…any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.. I apologise for the long windedness….here we are.

You have a great story. I really like that you guys aren't giving up. Perhaps today it's a ragtag crew, but in the future, you and your friends may form the foundation of a great club. I like the idea of reborn, or resurrected.

In addition to the the actual word for your name, perhaps you could also incorporate a symbol, such as the Phoenix of Greek mythology. These were just found on the web, but you could probably find someone locally to create some source artwork of your own:

Does it have to be in Japanese? What about just calling it by the name of your town? Or using something in English to express the way you feel about the club? You could name it after your Sensei in some kind of way, did he have a nick name of some kind? Just some thoughts, good luck with your club with whatever name you call it.

uh, maybe he lives in the Canadian equivalent of Peculiar MO. City/location doesn't always work.

My Japanese is non-existent. I just always wanted to start a judo club in Peculiar. Could you imagine the t-shirts for Peculiar Judo?

Sorry to derail the thread. to the OP, I would suggest contacting the family of your original sensei, and talking with them. See if they have an opinion. See if they will help you support the new dojo by helping you kick start your efforts.

Let me just add that you will find the people on
these threads very helpful in naming your club.

When I started up a new club and asked for help
with a name, a person making their FIRST post
came up with the name for me.

Hang in there and see what eventuates.

You may want to do a thread search which will hopefully discover Steve's thread and maybe a few others. There might be an existing name suggestion which appeals to you, or get's you moving in a direction.

So, what IS japanese for “hold the sushi” anyway?

Like Bird In Hand, Pennsylvania (which happens to be right in between Intercourse and Fertility)?

(sorry to derail--couldn't resist :hypocritesmiley:)

復活 - Fukkatsu - rebirth, resurrection
甦 - Yomigae - resurrection
回生 - Kaisei - resurrection
甦生 - Sosei - resurrection, rebirth

The last would be my choice if being used in the context of naming a dojo.

bythesea- We did actually consider using the word phoenix...never did think about using the symbol of the Phoenix (go figure, duh.) that is a great idea thanks...

Nic- we've had issues with the town (council) regarding the loss of our tatami, they were totally disrespectful to us and Todd so we've sworn we'd fly our own flag and not use the town's name. We're steering away from naming the club in Todd's name...we do intend to host a memorial tournament in his name next fall (hopefully annually), that's master plan of course we just need to get the club off the ground first. We are considering some english options we just thought a Japanese name would be kewl.

Steve I'll be sure to look for your thread...thanks.

judogido...actually all I've got is Shushi and Miso....and anything else on the menu at the Manchu Wok (if that's japanese...not disrespect intended)

Bird in Hand, PA huh? http://www.bird-in-h...in_hand_bakery/ ...for the bird in hand bakery....their specialty apparently is sticky bunz.
