Election results, articles from board members on judo - juji gatame, parent involvement, direction for the USJA.

It's late and I have to go to work tomorrow so if anyone feels motivated to edit better, please feel free. If you could edit the November issue, I am looking for a volunteer.

This is nicely done and designed to promote Judo education and serve the larger Judo community.

I'm delighted to see "The Modern Kodokan Throwing Certification Program". The text it is based upon, by Toshiro Daigo, is the most complete reference for Judo tachi waza ever written. By challenging Judo enthusiasts, including instructors, to engage in this program will increase the understanding of Judo principles and technical quality.

I seem to fall into the technical long term learner category described in the video's introduction.

This program should also serve to offset the narrow range of techniques focused on in IJF style competitive Judo today.

I think that by encouraging or requiring the demonstration to be done in motion that participants would also increase vital timing skills.

Not being a U.S. resident I'll suggest a similar program to Judo Canada. I'd like to know more about how the program will be administered e.i. is there a feedback part like "improve your kuzushi and the placement of your left foot and re-submit" ?

AM,

I think the Modern Kodokan Throwing Technique Certification Program is a great idea. Will there be any possibility of gaining points toward promotion with it?

This comment is from Hal Sharp, USJA Life member and former USJA vice-president (a LONG time ago) who is one of the key people in this program:

------------------

Thank you for your interest and comments. The program will be conducted online. This includes the "program application", "payment", and the "test application with video with examiners approval/comments". USJA Grass Roots link will show who is in the program and their progress (i.e., tests passed and certificate awards. Our computer programing is in the planning phase and hopefully will be completed before the year end. If Canada is interested will assist you. Until the program is up and running, I suggest the those interested, form a "technical study group" in you dojo or area, each member buy the book and start studying. You can start videoing, however you may want to hold off until we have finalized the instructions for preparing and transmitting video.
For better judo,
Hal Sharp

Yes, of course as it directly ties into our testing requirements.

Why? Because it is a good way to keep motivated and track performance of people who don't compete. Often people join as older adults, or, for whatever reason, they just don't have the time or interest in competition.

I look at it sort of like merit badges. You learn something, you demonstrate that and you get the proof. Some people like to learn just for the sake of learning, not winning, and this is a way to recognize what they learned.

I also think it is a good counterpoint to the development of juniors who win 50 tournaments in divisions of two or three kids and get to black belt without knowing much more than o soto gari and kesa gatame.

I want a tai otoshi merit badge!

Seriously, I think this is a wonderful idea from the stand point of emphasizing techniques, and not competition. For people involved in clubs that a primarily competition oriented, it's a way of aknowledging their contributions. I also see it as a good thing for competitors, especially when they are having to go light because of injury. Any time you're forced to think differently about stuff, you make advancements. You add new techniques, and you get to think about throws a bit differently, and apply new knowledge to what you already think you know. Reminds me that the most important improvement to my harai ocoshi came as a result of adding uchi mata to my arsenal.

Will it be possible to earn points (because that's kind of a required thing) for holding a certification?

I do like the concept of the program and am already looking to how I can use it for my programs.

I don't know. Can you come to the National Coaches Conference in Las Vegas in January? I just talked to Hal Sharp and he said he will be there. Hopefully, John Moe will come, too. Then, you can ask them in person all you want about the program.
