Hi All,
As some of you are aware the BJA have implemented a new Dan grade technical syllabus, within it are the use of three kata, Nage, Katame and Go No Sen.
I,m having some difficulty obtaining a definitive version of Go No Sen, the other Katas are widely practiced and the kodokan have released dvd's that go in to depth concerning them but as Go No Sen is not a recognised Kodokan Kata there seems to be varying ideas on how it is practiced. Hense the lack of material on the kata, there are a few versions on youtube but from the angle of the camera and the spped of the performance it would be difficult to learn it properly from them. in order to learn it correctly i,m looking for a version from a good angle with both full speed and slowed down versions, rather than stumble through a kata thinking its correct but not really being sure i,d like to spend my time wisely and learn it properly, i had thought the BJA produced a copy for senior examiners but i,ve been unable to source a copy.
So my question is this...does anyone know where i could source a copy of a dvd on the kata?
Thanks very much for any suggestions or help

Ray,

there are many different versions of Gonosen-no-Kata out there. And because it´s not an official Kodokan-kata, nobody can say, which of the versions is "right" or "wrong". You can find ore information here: http://judoforum.com...hp?showforum=42. So you must find out, which version the BJA preferes.

Good luck!

Well, I performed on the official german instruction video.... But I don´t think, that the BJA will accept it.

This version is close to the original Kawaishi-kata: http://www.dailymoti...raki31jan_sport
But the performance is technically not very good.

Hiya wdax,
Again thankyou!, as most people here in Scotland with the exception of one or two are unaware of the exact requirements of the kata with exception to the order of the techniques, any visual demonstraitions are a good help, if a definitave copy of what the BJA require doesnt surface then i,ll just watch all the versions available on line and using the BJA dan grade syllabus book muddle through it as best i can, we have high hopes of running a kata course in the near future with Mr Bob Thomas 7th dan one of the few people in Scotland with an in depth understanding and knowledge of the katas of judo and so i,m sure when the opportunity presents itself i,ll look forward to him picking it apart for me and making all the nessesary corrections, in the mean time though folks should any one else no where to obtain a copy i would appreciate it very much.

So the BJA requires you to learn the Go no Sen but can't provide an example? I wonder why it was selected.

You will find a video on the Judo Information Site kata page at http://judoinfo.com/katamenu.htm, but I can't vouch for its accuracy.

These are german people showing gonosen for sandan-exam. It´s not really how it should look like.....

First, there is something special for the region they from - uke throws first before tori applies the counter-attack. Second: the techniques are rather poor.....

I have no idea how you're going to resolve the Go-no-sen-no-kata reference dilemma, but the Kodokan is preparing new Nage-no-Kata and Katame-no-Kata English instruction manuals, and there is a new Nage-no-Kata English DVD. They should be available in a few months.

Hi Craig,
I know Thomas Sensei, from way back, he and my coach are very good freinds, we have been speaking over the last few days with a veiw to running some kata courses in our dojo, its early days yet and i,ll have to get through the JS red tape but i,m sure it will happen, when it does i,ll be sure to post dates and times.

NBK,
Thanks for the post, i have 4 of the kodokan dvds so far, they are as you would expect first class, and luckily one of the moderators(i wont mention a name just in case they wish to remain annonimous) has been very helpful and kind and organised a copy of the bja version to be sent to me, it just goes to show, judo is not just a series of techniques we use to upend one another, mutual benefit overspills into all areas of life, from helping a neighbour out to sharing a dvd with a fellow judoka you,ve never met!
All the very best

Geoff who posts regularly on this Forum is very sound in Go-no-sen-no-Kata. A PM in his direction might get you some help too.
