I heard so many times comments that there is not many judokas in mma. And so many are mentioning Karo Parisyan. So I tough it would be nice to build a topic where people could add names and info about successful or potential mma fighters with a judo background.
Please check that the fighter really have a proper judo background, before you add. So don't comment if you use only hearsay. A guy with a few years of recreational judo in US is not a fighter with a judo background, even if the guy is a state champion. On the other hand a champion of St Petersburg is very much a fighter with a judo background.

Do the players in the thread have bb in judo:Yes they do, although this is totally irrelevant. More important is that they have trained judo daily in a competitive environment for an extensive time period.

It would also be nice if this thread could stay clean of comments and discussion could be done in some other thread.

I can begin:

Jason Jones (age 27) (sherdog record 8 - 5 - 0 )
judo: Former Netherlands judo champion.

While he does not have a very impressive record the man sure have a lot of talent. As so many other European fighters he could really benefit from training in
some top mma camp in states.

Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (age 33) (34 - 8 - 2)

Judo: While he never made it to top in Japanese judo Sakurai has a very strong judo background and skills that in many other countries would have made him a national medallist.

Dear SDjudoka. I was hoping to see a thread that could have been usable in future for new judo and mma fans. Therefore it would have bee nice if you could have seen effort to properly introduce Yoshiuki Yoshida and Akiyama.

I also included in the thread a definition that this thread is about successful or potential mma fighters. While things that Yoshida did in mma are truly amazing (when considering his age etc) I can not see him as a potential or very good mma fighter. And I can not see at all how Min Soo Kim should be included in this thread.

So please either see some effort and follow the (maybe subjective) definition of the thread or make a new one.

Edit:

OK maybe I was to hasty on Hidehiko. On his past days in MMA he properly filled the criteria of this thread. One have to take on consideration the level of his opponents.
Sorry SDjudoka. But still, let's see some effort.

Fedor Emelianenko 32 (28 - 1 - 0)
Posted Image

Judo: Fedor has bronze from Russian nationals and two A-tournament medals. Judo was his first sport and he was strongly concentrating on judo when he got scouted by RINGS-organization. Due to collapse of Soviet Union the funding for judokas was poor at the time and Fedor accepted the offer to fight in RINGS. He is one of the very few international judo players who have made the decision to concentrate on MMA while still having hopes of growing success in judo.

Shinya Aoki (25) 19 - 3 - 0
Judo: Aoki was a one of the top juniors in Japan and received high level coaching trough his childhood. Yet his newaza skills were not enough to bring him to top level as an adult and he moved to MMA 2003 and gained quickly wins with his judo speciality jujigatame.

Hector Lombard 17 - 2 - 1
Judo: Cuban champion and national team member who holds wins over several well known judokas.

Posted Image

Compared to many other judokas it seem that Lombard's MMA career is well build and he has found good training camps. Whether this is due to him or his agent is not known to me.

Kazuo Misaki 32 (21 - 9 - 2)
Wins over Kang and Henderson
Judo: Through junior high school and high school Misaki trained like a pro in judo, but then his motivation began to fade and 2001 he began his career in
mma.

Hiromitsu Miura showed some amazing throws against Carlos Condit in the WEC if you look it up.
Yoshiuki Yoshida was high school national champ, his team won the national championship in high school and high school open weight champ. recently lost to Kosh Koshcheck in the UFC but his fight against Jon Koppenhaver "War Machine" was Judo domination in mma at its finest.

It would be nice if you guys could add record, few words of their judo, a picture and video. That way the thread would more entertaining and could maybe made sticky. I have maybe twenty guys/girls in my mind still, but my time is very limited.

Miura and Yoshiuki Yoshida are good additions. Miura has also extensive competition career.

"Only 2005 he began to train also bjj."

WRONG shinya did not begin training in 2005 he won the shooto belt in 06 and he was already a bjj black belt. No one goes from blue to black in one year.

"while still having hopes of growing success in judo."

Fedor has not entered a Judo event since 1998 he is was the World Combat sambo champ in 08( a lot of Judoka like to down play his Sambo background in favor of judo)

Yes, I do know you have issues with judo;)

Aoki: Last year’s “Ground Impact Gi-05” Shinya Aoki suffered a humiliating 8-0 defeat against Naoyuki Watanabe.
To train for his revenge match, Aoki took up residence at Marcelo Garcia’s Brazillian dojo, and spent countless hours preparing for the bout. “Last time, I was looking down on Jiu-jitsu,” said Aoki. Clearly this member of the Judo elite would take his opponent more seriously this time.

There is several judo players who began their bjj career from a purple or brown belt.

Fedor was scouted to RINGS from a judo tournament. And I have to add, that Vitor you really do not understand sambo or judo in Russia. But please began your own thread where you can discuss these with people that are willing and please do not mess this thread.

Fedors My space:
He was the 1998 bronze medalist in the Russian Judo championships open-weight division and the 1999 bronze medalist at the Moscow International Judo.
