I'm partly of Ukrainian descent, as are a huge number of Canadians. Ukrainians were given free land to settle the West of Canada because they were thought to be the toughest people on earth at the time. You see, no one else wanted to settle there. I imagine the ones who stayed behind are still pretty tough. :)

(Regarding fencing - which included all weapons and wrestling) it is noble, and in my opinion to be preferred next to divinity, for as divinity preserves the soul from hell and the devil, so does this noble science defend the body from wounds & slaughter. And moreover, the exercising of weapons puts away aches, griefs, and diseases, it increases strength, and sharpens the wits. It gives a perfect judgement, it expels melancholy, choleric and evil conceits, it keeps a man in breath, perfect health, and long life. It is unto him that has the perfection thereof, a most friendly and comfortable companion when he is alone, having but only his weapon about him. It puts him out of fear, & in the wars and places of most danger, it makes him bold, hardy and valiant. - George Silver, Paradoxes of Defence, Chapter 1 (1599)

JudoUkraine,

I go to the YMCA International Judo Camp in New York every year and have become very good friends with Konstantine Tshovrebashvili from the Ukraine. He's a great guy and he has great judo! I always learn something from him... all the kids that he brings to the camp every year are also really good.

I also met Mashurenko (sp?) there one year --- also great judo.

Funny, I could have sworn it was because they knew how to grow wheat. ;wry)

They still do if our export figures are any indication.

Of course knowing how to grow wheat and being tough are not mutually exclusive. My heritage is 3/4 Ukrainian 1/4 Polish.

My Dido chose to get off the train in Toronto though, so no wheat farmers in my family.

His demonstration is beautiful to watch, but heikojr has experienced it up-close and personal.

Lots of Ukrainians from the former USSR playing judo all over the world. Go to any little Ukraine or Little Russia in a major city and you'll find some. Welcome to the forum.
