Gill and Jukado gis

So I'm looking for a new gi, and I've come across Jukado and Gill gi's. They're on Jukado.com and I'm into the Gill coach, because I'm looking for a lighter uniform. I'm curious if anyone has tried them and knows how they fit and the shrinkage. I'm 6 ft. tall, 165 lbs, with long limbs (tall and lanky). Mizuno's hardly ever fit me (except my friends new Yusho 3.5 fit me surprisingly ok in sleeve length, but before any shrinking), and the only one that has is a Fushida icon 4 slim fit(and I'm more than likely going to wait for Christo to re-up on some Tournament gis). I've heard Gill's shrink, but I have no experience with either, and any advice would help a ton.

Good in newaza, bad in newaza randori?

Hello my friends, I have a bit of a problem. In shiai I have won many times by newaza strangle or armlock (just saying), and I have begun to feel like a bit of a specialist. The problem is that for me this skill set does not particularly transfer well into newaza randori in practice when you start from knees/backs. I can easily lose to shodans and even sankyus when starting from knees in a more bjj style progression, usually due to the wild scrambles that occur. This would not be a huge problem, as at least I'm winning competition; however I feel like my judo is not well rounded, and all of my newaza is strictly against unsuspecting opponents. So my question is if anyone else can relate, or maybe you are opposite of me, where your newaza doesn't transfer to shiai? Does anyone else feel as if it's two different styles of newaza? and practicing one may not benefit the other. How do you find an equilibrium between the focuses?

Who was Tobari?

There are some mentions of incidents to be found, that include the name Tobari.

At first, there are the fights of Tobari (Kodokan) against Tanabe Matauemon (Fusen Ryu):

Quote

Encounters between professors of the state were the exception. However, public opinion got so worked up that in January 1891 an inter-group combat took place in which Tobari (then 3rd dan judo, he died an 8th dan) for the Kodokan opposed [Matauemon] Tanabe, expert of the Fusen-ryu school. One must not commit the error of considering the ancient jujutsu as being a priori inferior to modern judo.
Straightaway Tanabe sought the combat on the ground, but Tobari succeeded in remaining standing up. After a fierce fight Tanabe won by a very successful stranglehold on the ground. Tobari, bitterly disappointed by the defeat, began to feverishly study groundwork.

The year after, he challenged Tanabe again. This time it was a ground battle and once more Tanabe won. He was now famous and, in the name of the ancient schools, challenged the members of the Kodokan, and even Isogai (then 3rd dan, at the time of his death he was a 10th dan) was put in danger from his ground technique. The Kodokan then concluded that a really competent judoka must possess not only a good standing technique but good ground technique as well. This is the origin of the celebrated 'ne-waza of the Kansai region'. And in conclusion to all this one may very well say that Mataemon Tanabe, too, unconsciously contributed towards the perfecting of the judo of the Kodokan.

Then, there are mentions that one of the "most proficient" of Kanos students and fighters in the late 19th century was:

Quote

Tobari Takizaburo who later became a teacher of the Tenjin Shinyo Ryu after studying under lnoue Keitaro.

Furthermore, one can find this:

Quote

A second, although incomplete line of the Tenjin Shinyo ryu traces its lineage through Tobari Kazu who received her training from Tobari Takisaburo. Tobari had in turn studied under Iso Mataichiro, the younger brother of the fourth headmaster of the ryu. She maintained the dual traditions of Tenjin Shinyo Ryu and the Shin no Shinto-ryu until her death some years ago, running a small dojo in Osaka in which many of her students were strong judo players. As this line seems to have become inactive in recent years its survival is cast in some doubt.

Additionally, I found some articles in old newspapers:

- In 1907 a Tobari, together with an Ohse, visited the school of the German "Athletenvater" Theodor Siebert in Alsleben. Earlier Tobari had taught Jujutsu to the German princes.

- In March and April of 1910, a T.Tobari taught Jujutsu in Austria, and particulary instructed Henri Baur, an Austrian allround-athlet, successful wrestler (Austrian and European Champion, 2nd at the 1906 Olympic games in Athen in the heavyweight-division), and student as well as successor of Hans Koeck, who introduced Jujutsu in Austria in 1905.

- Finally, in 1912, there was a short (ca. 4 min.) movie produced in Paris: Démonstration de jiu-jitsu par le professeur T. Tobari

My questions are:

1. Does anybody know, if this "Tobaris", "T.Tobaris" and " Tobari Takisaburous" are all one and the same person?

2. When did Tobari start with Tenjin Shinyo Ryu, and did he continue with Kodokan Judo (As I think it must have taken some time to achieve hachidan)?

3. Does anybody know who this Ohse was, who accompanied Tobari to Alsleben in 1907? It seem to have been a semi-official trip at least, as the article mentiones that it was at "public expenses".

Active in Japan as a fighter as well as as teacher, 1907 in Germany, 1910 in Austria, 1912 in France. If this is really all about one and the same person, he seems to have been quite as active as some of the better known names of his time, and might have been of some prominence, back then at least.

Kind regards,

Need ultra-lightweight blue gi that fits like Mizuno Shiai size 2

Some time ago I purchased a white Mizuno Shiai, size 2, with assistance from members of this forum. It is basically the perfect size for me, as I am 177cm tall, 64kg. Sleeves and pants are legal, and the chest is nice and snug. It feels fairly heavy; definitely not a light judogi.

Now I'm looking to pick up a blue gi. Obviously a blue Mizuno Shiai is an option, but I would like something much, much lighter for summer practice. I'm not too concerned about single vs double weave, or the brand name. Just something for light randori, uchikomi, technical practice, teaching kids, etc. Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks.

Gi recommendations to replace a worn Shiai?

So I have a worn Mizuno shiai. Lasted me a year, but holes have been springing up on sides of the hip and where the skirt connects to the jacket. A ref finally told me I couldn't use it for competition, and my mom is unwilling to patch it up another time just for more holes to appear.

Any similar double weave gis? I enjoyed how comfortable the shiai was. I plan to use it for both training (sometimes twice before a wash- i currently train daily) and competition, so I'm looking a for a durable one at a similar or cheaper price range.

More on Tani Otoshi: Please rebuke me...

(Didn't want to highjack offensive tani otoshi post)

I am 47 and just started Judo this winter (BJJ blue belt).
I am trying to learn JUDO... you know, technique.

I try to always be good uke - give AND take, not making every second a death match.

My instructor give me a technique to work on: Tai Otoshi.
But I noticed that there was a tech called TANI otoshi... so I looked it up: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=O2HGqT7fnAQ
I used tani otoshi with some success offensively.
But I discovered that it is an awesome counter!

Just wait till he (the 225lb 30 year old) wraps his monster-arm around my neck for a modified harai goshi, drop my free hand to his waist and slide my leg behind his and down we go!

It works... well. Very high percentage.

Finally, a question:Is that "cheating"?
I used technique to "defeat" a larger, stronger opponent.
But... is that judo?
How do you use Tani Otoshi?
How should I use it?Thanks Much!

How to determine the quality of judogi?

All those who believe or think that the weight always means quality on judogis are confused. A judogi of 1000grs is not always more resistent than a judogi of 750grs.
It is the type of construction of the material (cloth) what it gives more resistance. That is why you will never find a judogi made in Japan of 1000grs. A japanese sport: judo
Some judoist and judo athlets like stiff (heavy or hard) judogi to avoid be gripped easily, so the y chose the 900-1000grs judogi. Those kind of judogis are made from a thick thread, so less quantity of thread is needed to make that kind of cloth (material). Whereas a resistent cloth is made from thin thread, so more quantity of cotton will be needed to make the fbric (material). Also finally the price determines the quality.

I'v taken Judo back up again ( had to give it up for college and other bits ). My old gi is after getting too small, so I'v basically been looking for a new one. I was never too sure about buying a gi online, but Fushida seem to have gotten many great reviews.

Tagoya Master Judo Gi

After lots of deliberating and price comparing I think I’m going to buy the Tagoya Master Judo gi from here http://www.kicksport.com/shop/Tagoya-Master-Judo-Gi-White.html
I’ve exchanged emails with Kicksport and they seem to think the 195 would fit me best, seeing that I’m 6ft 3-4 and weigh around 205lb (93kg) and taking in to account the shrinkage of around 5 cm.

The website says that this is an 800gsm double weave. I had an 1100gsm Blitz Olympian before which was way too thick for my liking. Whilst I want a double weave I don’t want a gi that will stand up on its own. Can anyone attest to the thickness of this gi?

Any other comments regarding this gi from those that have had experience with it?
